homunculus
A downloadable game
"Homunculus" is a solo journaling RPG that invites players into the role of an obsessed geneticist on the brink of a scientific breakthrough. Through the drawing of playing cards, players navigate the complex journey of creating the ultimate lifeform, known as the homunculus. The game begins with the selection of character traits and the defining attributes of the homunculus, followed by a series of choices and events that unfold within the constraints of limited funding. Each card drawn represents a choice, consequence, or milestone, and players record their journey in a journal, weaving a rich and personalized narrative.
The game's structure emphasizes themes of ambition, ethics, creativity, and the delicate balance between scientific innovation and moral responsibility. The relationship between the geneticist and the homunculus, as well as the choices that shape their shared destiny, provides a nuanced exploration of creator and creation. With four distinct paths leading to different legacies and fates, "Homunculus" offers a thought-provoking and immersive experience that challenges players to reflect on the nature of life, identity, and the human condition. Whether celebrated as a genius or reviled as a monster, the choices made within the game resonate with profound questions and timeless dilemmas.
This game was made for A Game By its Cover 2023. Concept and famicase design for "Homunculus" by Agustin Crisostomo (@agoooseteen).

Experienced the epic rise and tragic fall of my geneticist's entire career in the matter of 16 cards. Extremely well written and the simple gameplay (no dice, no movement, just card revealing) let me focus on the story and spend more time journaling and sketching. This is my second time experiencing a solo journaling game and it has solidified it as one of my favorite genres of games. I'll have to try out some of your others!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback! Knowing that this has become one of your favorite genres is high praise indeed. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it, and I hope my other games bring you just as much joy. Happy journaling!
